NAVA Webinar Series

NAVA: Personalized Ventilation in the NICU

Thurs, Oct 28, 2021: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT

Program concluded

Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) promotes lung-protective synchronous ventilation in proportion to the
patient’s needs with higher diaphragmatic efficiency regardless of patient category or size. In our efforts to improve
neonatal patient outcomes, we will explore the latest clinical evidence utilizing the electrical activity of the diaphragm
(Edi) monitoring and NAVA ventilation.

Three objectives of what the attendee will learn/be:

    • Discuss the mechanics and physiological concepts of NAVA ventilation
    • Discuss the most recent neonatal literature
    • Identify three NAVA management strategies of neonatal ventilation

Presenters:

Howard Stein, M.D.
Medical Director, NICU
Section Head Neonatology, ProMedica Ebeid Children’s Hospital, Toledo, OH – USA

Kimberly S. Firestone MSc, RRT
Neonatal Respiratory Outreach Clinical Liaison
Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron, OH – USA

NAVA, from indications to Ventilatory management of the Adult patient

Wed, Nov 3, 2021: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT

Program concluded

During this webinar, Dr. Carlos Ferrando will focus on NAVA for the adult patient category. He will demonstrate how to use NAVA mode and review best practices. In addition, Carlos Ferrando will review the latest clinical studies which include the NAVIATOR Study which shows 35% increase of VFD which is statistically significant.

Three objectives of what the attendee will learn/be:

    • To review the latest evidence
    • To show how to start using the NAVA mode
    • To show how to select the settings to optimize the Ventilatory management with NAVA

Presenter:

Dr. Carlos Ferrando, MD, PhD, DESA
Head of Surgical Intensive Care Unit Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care
Clinic University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain

NAVA Implementation - A team approach at the University of Missouri

Thurs, Nov 11, 2021: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT

Program concluded

How University of Missouri Health Care implemented Edi monitoring and NAVA use. Our experiences and case presentations from multiple patient presentations reveal an interaction between the clinician, machine, and patient that otherwise would likely go unnoticed.

Three objectives of what the attendee will learn/be:

    • Correct placement of the Edi catheter
    • How we interpret the data received from Edi monitoring
    • How we use Edi for diagnostics and the NAVA mode to improve patient care and experience

NAVA: Real-World Application

Thurs, Nov 18, 2021: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT

Program concluded

In this presentation, Dr.Hopkins will provide an overview and technical summary of NAVA technology, with a focus on the key understanding needed to make the technology more clinically effective. He will summarize existing observational studies and interventional trials, with a focus on randomized controlled trials. He will also describe a future observational study (ASSIST) and a planned effectiveness study (RESTUS2). Finally he will describe some of the learning points we have found in using this technology over the years and also describe strategies for embedding it in the real world of adult intensive care during/in recovery from the COVID 19 pandemic.

Three objectives of what the attendee will learn/be:

    • Understanding the technology: advantages/efficacy/limitations
    • Understanding the existing evidence base (efficacy vs effectiveness) including future observational and interventional trial plans
    • Implementation and use of NAVA in the real world of critical care (especially in the pandemic and pandemic recovery context)
