Course Description: This one hour program is designed for healthcare professionals directly involved with the care of the patient requiring intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) therapy. The program begins with a brief review of the hemodynamics of counterpulsation, followed by a discussion on proper placement of the percutaneous intra-aortic balloon catheter and then an overview of technical aspects of the IABP.
Demonstration of the Getinge IABP set-up will also be included in this program

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the program the learner will be able to:
Discuss physiological effects achieved by the mechanics of inflation and deflation of the IAB as it relates to the cardiac cycle illustrated by an augmented arterial pressure waveform.
Identify and verbalize arterial pressure waveform changes during counterpulsation therapy.
Identify indications and contraindications for IABP therapy.
